My review and perspective on model: DC40 Ball vacuum cleanerThis is the Dyson DC40 Multi Floor Upright Vacuum Cleaner Review please check the reviews page for a comparison of other vacuum cleaners.
The Dyson DC40 Ball is a favorite among many of my customers. Dyson really is quickly becoming one of the most affordable mid to high end vacuum manufacturers on the market. And I can generally recommend them to most people who vacuum more than once a month as they will pay for themselves over time. A Dyson isn't all shine and glamor though, they do require a small amount of work to keep them running like new. Luckily unlike many cheaper brands they can be kept running because they are durable enough to be serviced. Dyson really became famous with their commercials that claimed that they never lose suction. While this is true, it's kind of tricky advertising. A Dyson never loses suction at the motor, but it can clog and lose suction long before it arrives at the motor. What Dyson is referring to when they say that their vacuums never lose suction is actually their system of multiple suction points. Even their large upright vacuums suction line from the motor splits into several smaller suction points before reaching the dirt cup. This design is ingenious as it not only allows for one port to clog leaving the others free but it truly does create more suction. As we learned in science class fast flowing fluids creates low pressure, and low pressure is what we perceive as suction in a vacuum. So the idea of necking down the suction tubes to smaller tubes creates very fast moving air, in turn making a huge low pressure zone, for more suction than your average vacuum. The bad thing about this design is that while it gives several bypasses for clogs it aids in the clogging process with smaller easier to clog tunnels the dirt can potentially travel into. You should watch out for this if you decide to purchase a Dyson.
The overall rating on this vacuum is brought down by the price. The cheapest I've seen one of these is for $450 and some places sell them for much more. While it is a good vacuum it's no Kirby when it comes to longevity, versatility, and pure suction power. Sure you couldn't touch a new Kirby for $500 but many used Kirby's sell right in that range. If you're looking for a good vacuum and don't mind minimal maintenance between cleanings and don't want the weight of a used Kirby then this Dyson DC40 is where you should look.
One feature I do like about the Dyson DC40 Multi-Floor Upright Vacuum Cleaner is the dirt cup. While I'm not generally a fan of dirt cups, they often create more mess when you are trying to empty them, the Dyson DC40 Multi-Floor Upright Vacuum Cleaner fixes part of this by using a bottom dumping dirt cup. One that you can stick in your trash can and push a button on top to empty the cup. This is great, but also creates a disadvantage... if your latch breaks or wears out (which is common with normal abuse) then you have to get creative when you try to empty your dirt, or it will be on the floor again, creating a bigger mess than even traditional dirt cups.
Model: DC40 Ball Product DescriptionDC40 Multi floor is a lightweight Dyson Ball upright vacuum cleaner for every floor type. The machineís cleaner head has an active base place, which self-adjusts automatically for optimal contact with all floor types. On hard floors the base plate lowers to create an efficient seal, and the brush bar lifts clear off the floor to protect delicate surfaces. On carpet, the base plate rises and the brush bar lowers for optimum bristle penetration- removing ground-in dirt and pet hair from different depths of carpet pile. And because the cleaner head adjusts automatically, there are no fiddly dials and you donít need to bend down to make adjustments.
Dyson cyclones capture more dirt than any other cyclone. DC40 Multi floor has Radial Root Cyclone technology with remodeled airflows to maximize suction power. DC40 Multi floor also has patented Ball technology. It turns on the spot, which allows you to maneuver more easily around obstacles and into awkward spaces. And because the motor and other key components are located inside the ball, the machine has a lower center of gravity- making it even easier to steer.
Patented Dyson Technology:
Dyson engineers are constantly testing and inventing, trying to find new ways to make their technology better. As they work, they file patent applications to protect their inventions from copycat manufacturers. Thatís why the only place youíll find Dyson technology is inside a Dyson machine.
New Radial Root Cyclone technology
Ordinary vacuum cleaners rely on bags to trap dust and dirt. As you use them, the tiny holes in the bag clog up with particles of dust. This restricts the flow of air, so the vacuum cleaner loses suction. Dyson vacuum cleaners donít rely on bags to trap dust and dirt. They use cyclone technology, which spins the air at incredibly high speeds. The cyclones inside a Dyson vacuum cleaner generate centrifugal forces many thousands of times the force of gravity. Dust, dirt and pet hair are flung out of the airflow and straight into the bin. No bag. No loss of suction.
Dyson has been continually refining cyclone technology since inventing it more than 20 years ago. DC40 Multi floor has new Radial Root Cyclone technology. Reconfigured air channels and improved flow efficiency reduce turbulence and preserve air pressure, so that the inner cyclones can extract more microscopic particles. These refinements help remove more dirt, dust, allergens and pet hair for the airflow.
Ball technology to help you steer with ease
Dyson Ball upright vacuum cleaners use patented Ball technology to overcome the steering limitations of fixed wheels. They ride on a ball, which turns on the spot so you can steer with ease, changing direction with just a turn of the wrist.
The ball itself is made of glass-reinforced polypropylene- the same material used in the manufacture of car dashboards. It combines high impact strength with the resistance to distortion. The ball also holds the heaviest component, (the motor), positioned towards the base for a lower center of gravity and greater stability.
DC40 Multi Floor Product Features:
Self-adjusting cleaner head
Many upright vacuum cleaners use fixed settings and their cleaner heads donít self-adjust to different floor types. And the bigger the gap between the cleaner head and floor, the more suction power is wasted. DC40 Multi floor has an active base plate. It creates the optimal cleaner head contact for every floor type, reducing air leaks and retaining suction power on all floor types- wood, carpet, vinyl and tile.
Instant release wand
DC40 Multi floor has an instant release, long reach wand for cleaning stairs and awkward areas- it stretches up to 5 times in length. There are no separate parts to assemble.
DC40 Multi floor comes with a Combination tool and a Stair tool. The Combination tool has a debris nozzle that converts to a brush tool for dusting. The Stair tool removes dirt and dust from corners and against vertical edges of stairs.
Approved for allergy sufferers
All new Dyson upright and canister vacuums are certified asthma & allergy friendly by the Asthma & Allergy Foundation of America. Dyson cyclones capture microscopic particles down to 0.5 microns in size, including pollen, mold and bacteria.
No extra costs
Other vacuum cleaners are still designed to need replacement bags and filters- and the cost soon adds up. Dyson vacuums donít have bags and have washable filters, so there are no extra costs..
5 year parts and labor warranty
Your Dyson vacuum cleaner is likely to take a few knocks and bashes during everyday use- but thatís nothing compared to what Dyson puts its machines through during testing and development. All Dyson vacuum cleaners undergo a lengthy and rigorous testing program. Thatís why DC40 Multi floor comes with a 5 year warranty- parts and labor guaranteed by Dyson.

The DC40 Ball is a Residential vacuum designed for use in the Residential environment. I have reviewed it accordingly, the price point of the DC40 Ball is set for the Residential industry which should be taken into consideration when purchasing or thinking about purchasing this vacuum. Commercial vacuum cleaners may be built to last longer and endure more abuse, but are more expensive and may be lacking some of the luxuries (such as light weight, or low noise) that you are accustomed to. On the contrary Residential vacuums are made at lower price points, lower quality, but are often lighter and quieter to use.
